How to Live in Philly Like a Local

Although moving to a new city is one of the most exciting things you can do, nobody wants to stick out as someone new or get marked as a tourist.  The balance between local and newbie is a delicate line, but if you do it right, you’ll have everyone convinced you to belong where you’ve landed.

Philadelphia is one of the most popular cities in the country right now.  Here’s how to blend in as someone who grew up here, even if you’re from the west coast.

Get to Know Public Transit

Public transit can be a dream in Philly!  Not only is this cheaper than paying for gas and insurance every month, but it also allows you to get wherever you want to go without having to get to know the city by driving.  Taking public transit will help you catch on more quickly with street names and will give you a better chance of seeming like a natural when someone asks for directions.

Don’t Worry About Roommates

If you’re considering moving here, you may think you need a roommate to afford any of the Philadelphia apartments for rent: but living is far more affordable here than in other major cities!   Although more expensive cities will nearly require you to have a roommate to be able to afford to live anywhere, in Philadelphia, you can often get away with being able to afford things on your own.  The cost of living here is 22% cheaper than in NYC before rent is even considered.  Pay your own way, and seek a solo apartment or house.

Check Out the Parkway Loop

This circular highway allows people to get around the city quickly.  Within it is a park that’s home to countless things to see and do.  From here, you can check out city hall, and then the Free Library, the Barnes, Sister Cities Park, and so much more.  This area also has multiple art pieces and memorials that help you remember the people who made this city possible.  Visiting this area will give you a better understanding of Chicago as a whole.

Know the History of the Philly Cheesesteak

The story of the Philly cheesesteak isn’t very complicated, but knowing it matters!  Starting in 1930, this awesome sandwich was invented by Pat Olivieri.  He was a local hot dog vendor who made his money on the streets of Philly during one of the roughest times for the city.  When he threw beef on his grill instead of hot dogs, added cheese, and slung it onto one of his buns, he created this iconic piece of Philly history.  The restaurant Pat’s King of Steaks named itself after him, and there’s a lot of argument over which cheesesteak is truly the best one.

Step Outside of Your Comfort Zone

One of the best ways to blend into Philadelphia is to get a little outside of your comfort zone!  The better you can embrace having fun and cutting loose instead of withholding your creativity, the more you’ll blend in.
